A return to the Camden Town Series iconography but more to do with survival in any city, how a city has layers and layers of different lives, and at some time they seem to rise up like an inventory of the dead into the space of the living.
'The Spirit
of London: This is a painting done in the middle of a series project when
I am confident of the image, meaning and painting technique. It was painted
in the Camden Falcon studio in 1994 and influenced by the French painters Fragonard
and Monet. The bird-chimera struggles to rise up out of the polluted and dirty
grasp of the city. The chimera also represents the spirit of the city itself,
choked and battered by mismanagement.'
