After spending
some time in the Lake District in the middle of a dark winter on a printmaking
residency, I started to draw the local farm animals and wildlife. The way the
country reverted back to ages past, shifting back to ethics and mores not that
different from Mediaeval times, led me into thinking of the images in Heraldic
designs - the Griffins, standing lions and other strange beings symbolizing aspects
of idealism. I had with me Kurt Selimann's book on Witchcraft through the ages,
Magic, Supernaturalism and Religion, which had some terrific woodcuts
of demons and other such examples of the imagination unfettered by science.
Combined with my interest in psychology this imagery was made into large emblematic
paintings investigating modern dilemmas - the struggles of the unconscious as
we prioritize our core belief system.
